Team Preview and Performance
WI-Women:
West Indies Women have not started this series the way they would have wanted. The first game at Arnos Vale went to Australia by 43 runs and though the bowling gave them something to build on, the batting told a completely different story.
Joseph and Matthews got together and made a decent fist of the power play, reaching 68/1 after ten overs with the chase very much still on. Then King came on and dismantled everything in the space of ten balls. Three wickets for zero runs and the game was gone before the back end even started. West Indies crawled to 121/6 and the dressing room will know that defeat had more to do with that one passage of play than anything else.
Joseph top scored with 45 off 39 balls and was clearly the most fluent batter out there. Taylor got to 28 but could never find the extra gear the situation demanded. Nobody else stepped up when it mattered and that has to change going into the second match.
Dottin carried the bowling attack with three wickets and was particularly effective in the power play and death overs, making Australia hit into the breeze and preventing anything bigger than 165. Henry was tidy alongside her, two wickets and an economy of 7.00 against a line-up that does not give much away for free.
Matthews put it plainly after the game. The batting needs to handle quality spin better and Australia will walk into the second match knowing they have already found the weak spot in this West Indies line-up.
West Indies Women Playing 11: Hayley Matthews, Qiana Joseph, Shemaine Campbelle, Deandra Dottin, Stafanie Taylor, Chinelle Henry, Zaida James, Mandy Mangru, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack, Aaliyah Alleyne
AUS-Women:
Australia Women lead this series 1-0 and that opening win in Kingstown was the kind of performance that reminded everyone why they are the team everyone else is chasing. A 43 run victory, not perfect by any means, but clinical where it counted.
Mooney held the batting together from start to finish. Her 79 off 55 balls was measured early and increasingly destructive as the innings developed. McGrath came in and hit a brisk 24 to push things past 160 and Australia closed on 164/6, which proved more than enough on the day.
With the ball, King was the difference. West Indies were still in the chase heading into the middle overs and then she bowled and that was that. Three wickets for 14 runs from four overs shut the game down completely. Molineux kept things tight in the power play with a wicket of her own and gave West Indies nothing easy at the top of the chase.
The fielding is the one thing Molineux was not happy about. Five dropped catches in a single innings is well below the standard Australia set for themselves and the captain made no attempt to hide that after the game. They got away with it this time but that generosity will not always go unpunished.
King already knows how to trouble this West Indies batting group and the rest of the bowling attack has the variety to back her up. Australia go into the second match holding all the cards and West Indies need a completely different batting performance to change that.
Australia Women Playing 11: Beth Mooney, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Tahlia McGrath, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Voll, Sophie Molineux, Alana King, Kim Garth, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown

WI-W vs AUS-W Pitch Report and Toss Condition
Arnos Vale plays true to its Caribbean nature. The surface offers grip and turn for spinners from early on and the ball tends to stay low, which makes free flowing stroke play difficult for any batter coming in fresh. Early overs are the best time to bat here and both sides know that.
As the match progresses the pitch slows down considerably and chasing becomes a real challenge. Spin dominates the second innings and any total above 150 starts to look very competitive on this surface.
The toss winner will almost certainly look to bat first and set a target on a fresh wicket. That thinking was proven right in the first T20I when Australia won the toss, chose to bat and posted 164/6 before their spinners ran through the West Indies chase. Expect both captains to have the same mind-set going into the second match.
