CSK Preview and Performance
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have had a nightmare start to IPL 2026. Three matches, three losses and sitting rock bottom of the points table with a net run rate of -2.517. For a franchise built on consistency and big game temperament, this is not the start anyone associated with CSK would have wanted.
The rot started in match 3 against Rajasthan Royals where CSK managed only 127 runs and RR knocked those off in just 12.1 overs. It was a batting collapse that set the tone for what was to follow. Against Punjab Kings in match 7, CSK actually posted a competitive 209/5 but their bowling let them down badly, PBKS chased it down with 8 balls to spare. Then came the heaviest blow, RCB posted a massive 250/3 in match 11 and CSK could only manage 207 in response, losing by 43 runs.
There have been individual bright spots though. Sarfaraz Khan has been outstanding, scoring 99 runs in 3 innings at a strike rate of 202.04 and looking like CSK’s most dangerous batter right now. Jamie Overton has contributed 80 runs as a lower order finisher and Ayush Mhatre has shown promise with 74 runs including a top score of 73. With the ball, Anshul Kamboj has been the one genuine wicket taking threat picking up 5 wickets in the tournament so far.
The bigger concerns are hard to ignore. Ruturaj Gaikwad has managed only 41 runs in 3 matches at an average of 13.67 and a captain badly out of form puts extra pressure on the rest of the batting unit. The bowling attack leaked 250 runs against RCB with most bowlers going at over 12 runs per over which is simply not good enough at this level. MS Dhoni remains unavailable with a calf strain and there is still no clarity on when he returns, while Dewald Brevis is expected to come back into the line-up after injury which at least gives CSK a boost in the middle order.
CSK need a win badly and they need it now. Match 18 against Delhi Capitals is not just another game, it is the match where they either show signs of life or fall further adrift in this IPL 2026 season.
Delhi Capitals Preview and Performance
Delhi Capitals (DC) have made a solid start to IPL 2026, sitting fourth on the points table with two wins from three matches. They have looked composed and well organised for most part but that one-run loss against Gujarat Titans in match 14 will sting, especially when KL Rahul was so close to pulling off something special.
The first two wins told you a lot about what DC are capable of. They chased 141 against Lucknow Super Giants in match 5 with 17 balls to spare and then went to Arun Jaitley Stadium in match 8 and knocked off 162 against Mumbai Indians just as comfortably. Both wins came by 6 wickets and both times DC looked in complete control of the chase.
Then came the match 14 heartbreak against Gujarat Titans, chasing 210, KL Rahul dug deep for a brilliant 92 off 52 balls and David Miller gave it everything unbeaten at the crease but DC fell one run short in a finish that could not have been any closer.
Sameer Rizvi has been the standout batter with 160 runs at a strike rate of 161.62, he has been the engine driving DC’s top order this season. KL Rahul has provided the experience and anchor role with 93 runs and that knock against GT showed exactly what he brings to this team under pressure.
With the ball, Lungi Ngidi has been the primary wicket taker with 5 wickets in 3 matches and both T Natarajan and Mukesh Kumar have contributed 4 wickets each in the death overs making DC a genuinely threatening bowling unit.
There is one concern heading into match 18. David Miller picked up a palm injury against GT and his availability against CSK is uncertain. Losing Miller would hurt DC’s finishing ability significantly. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav give DC strong spin options but both have been expensive on flatter pitches recently which CSK’s batters may look to target.
Delhi Capitals come into this game in better shape than CSK on paper and will be looking to bounce back from that gut-wrenching last ball defeat. Against a struggling CSK side, this is a match DC will back themselves to win.

CSK vs DC Key Players to Watch โ Match 18, IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
- Sarfaraz Khan: 99 runs in three matches at a strike rate of 202.04. While the rest of the CSK batting unit has struggled to find any rhythm this season, Sarfaraz has been the one batter who looks genuinely dangerous every time he walks in. CSK need him to fire again here.
- Ayush Mhatre: 74 runs in three games and still only getting started. The youngster has brought a freshness to the CSK top order that has been missing and he plays without fear. If he gets going at Chepauk, he can set the platform CSK desperately need.
- Anshul Kamboj: 5 wickets in the tournament and the one bowler in the CSK attack who has consistently asked questions of opposition batters. On a Chepauk pitch that may offer something for seamers early, Kamboj will be the man CSK look to for breakthroughs.
- Sanju Samson: Brings fluency and experience to the top order and knows this ground well. CSK need someone to anchor the innings and Samson has the game awareness to do exactly that under pressure.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
- Sameer Rizvi: 160 runs at a strike rate of 161.62. He has been DC’s most explosive batter this season and opposition bowlers have not found an answer to him yet. If he gets a good start at Chepauk, DC could be in a very strong position early.
- KL Rahul: His 92 off 52 balls against GT was one of the innings of the tournament so far even though it ended on the losing side. He is DC’s anchor and when he bats deep DC win games. Simple as that.
- Lungi Ngidi: 5 wickets in three matches and the kind of pace bowler who can exploit any early movement on offer at Chepauk. He has been DC’s most reliable wicket taker and CSK’s top order will need to deal with him early.
- Kuldeep Yadav: This is the pitch Kuldeep dreams about. Chepauk historically turns and his chinaman spin becomes a completely different proposition on a surface that offers grip and variable bounce. CSK will need a clear plan for him and even then he may cause problems.

CSK vs DC 18th Match Pitch Report โ MA Chidambaram Stadium
Chepauk does what Chepauk always does. The red soil surface here is low and slow, spinners get grip and turn from early on and batting gets harder as the game progresses. This is not a ground where you come in and play your natural game from ball one, you have to earn every run.
IPL 2026 has only seen one game at this venue so far and it threw up a surprisingly high scoring affair, PBKS chasing down 209 against CSK with 8 balls to spare. That result is very much an outlier though. Historically the average first innings score at Chepauk sits around 164 and the historical par score for a winning total is closer to 174. Anything above 185 here is generally a match winning score.
Spinners will be the story in the second innings as they almost always are at this ground. Toss will matter too, teams batting first have won 56.5% of matches here historically though the chasing side did win the only 2026 game played here. A total anywhere between 165 and 170 looks par for Match 18 and the team that handles spin better across both innings is likely to come out on top.
CSK vs DC Toss Prediction โ Match 18, IPL 2026
At Chepauk, the toss has always carried extra weight and Match 18 is no different. The surface gets slower and more difficult to bat on as the game progresses and with spinners expected to dominate the second innings, setting a target is the smarter option here. CSK know this ground better than anyone and batting first at their home fortress takes away the pressure of chasing on a turning track under lights. We back CSK to win the toss and elect to bat first.
