Team Performance and Preview
New Zealand:
The first game in Mount Maunganui raised serious questions. Dismissed for 91 and barely putting up a fight in the field, it was the kind of performance that leaves fans scratching their heads. But New Zealand sides have a habit of responding, and respond they did.
Hamilton brought out a completely different version of this team. Conway was patient, accumulative and eventually brutal, finishing with 60 as NZ put up 175 on the board. When South Africa batted, Sears and Ferguson made it look straightforward. Six wickets between them, opposition folded for 107, game done.
Auckland followed a similar script, just with different heroes. The bowlers kept South Africa to 136 and Ferguson was barely touchable. Nine runs off four overs in a T20 is extraordinary regardless of conditions. Latham then went about the chase quietly and efficiently, finishing unbeaten on 63. Series lead, job done.
Conway is clearly the form batter right now and his 100 runs across the series reflects how settled he looks. Latham has been equally valuable without quite getting the same attention. The honest concern for New Zealand is what happens if those two fail at the same time. The middle order has had minimal exposure and South Africa’s bowlers will have noticed.
Ferguson, Sears and Santner have collectively made life very difficult for the Proteas batters. The variety, the control and the ability to take wickets at key moments have all been there.
Wellington on March 22 sets up as a genuine contest. The ground tends to offer something for pace bowlers and the wind can play tricks on batters. South Africa are not out of this series yet but they need a result badly. New Zealand simply need to back what has been working over the last two matches.
New Zealand Playing 11: Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Tim Robinson, Nick Kelly, Bevon Jacobs, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Cole McConchie, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears, Lockie Ferguson
South Africa:
South Africa had the better of things early in this series. Jansen and Coetzee bowled with aggression in Mount Maunganui and dismissed New Zealand for just 91. De Kock and Hendricks then handled the chase comfortably, finishing with 7 wickets in hand. The Proteas won the opening match convincingly and looked like a side ready to dominate the series.
New Zealand had other plans. The Blackcaps came back hard in Hamilton and completely shut South Africa down. Chasing 176, the batting unit collapsed for 107 and never built any real partnership. Klaasen top scored with 28 but fought a lonely battle throughout. Auckland brought no improvement. South Africa posted 136/9 and despite bowling with discipline early, New Zealand chased it down with 8 wickets and 15 balls to spare. Two consecutive losses, momentum gone, series now sitting at 1-2.
De Kock has been the one batter carrying this lineup with 89 runs across three matches. His knock in the first game set the tone but South Africa need him firing again on Saturday. Klaasen has scored 64 runs throughout the series and keeps showing character but continues getting little support from the other end. Markram has averaged under 15 as captain and Wellington is the game where he needs to step up and lead from the front with the bat.
Jansen has been the pick of the bowlers with 6 wickets and brings consistent threat with the new ball. Coetzee has taken 4 wickets but will want to forget his Hamilton spell of 1/42 quickly.
Wellington on March 22 is a must-win for South Africa. Lose this and the series is gone. The batting needs to come together as a unit, not rely on one or two individuals to do the heavy lifting every single game.
South Africa Playing 11: Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Rubin Hermann, Jason Smith, Dian Forrester, George Linde, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Nqobani Mokoena, Lutho Sipamla

NZ vs SA Todayโs Match Pitch Report & Condition
Sky Stadium has a drop-in pitch that tends to do a bit early before settling into a decent batting surface as the game goes on. The bounce stays consistent throughout and fast bowlers will fancy their chances in the opening overs. Once the new ball loses its shine, batting under the Wellington lights becomes a whole lot more comfortable.
The short straight boundaries make it a ground where big hitters can cause real damage at any stage of the innings. The Wellington wind though is the factor that changes everything here. It makes high catches a lottery and can bring swing into play at unexpected moments, not just with the new ball.
Whoever wins the toss will almost certainly look to bowl first. Chasing has been the preferred option at this ground and given how the surface tends to play out across both innings, that call makes complete sense.
