Team Performance

Sri Lanka: Team Preview & Performance

Sri Lanka’s World Cup preparation went really bad after England defeated them 3-0 on their home ground earlier this month. The clean sweep exposed many problems in their team with both batting and bowling that they need to fix quickly before tournament begins.

Moving forward in the World Cup, Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara will need to give them good starts at the top order. Nissanka been in decent form and was one of the few positives against England, scoring 80 runs in three matches at strike rate of 148, so there is some hope there.

In the middle order, Kusal Mendis will carry main responsibility again as he was top scorer for them in England series with 95 runs in three games at strike rate of 151. Charith Asalanka and Pavan Rathnayake can give him support in that phase. Rathnayake scores at over 130 strike rate in middle overs, so team will be depending on him to give that kind of impact along with Mendis.

With the new ball, Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera will be looking for early wickets. Chameera been in outstanding form this season, picking 13 wickets in seven matches at average of just 9.66. How he achieves against Paul Stirling and Harry Tector could be significant for this match.

Dasun Shanaka and Maheesh Theekshana also contributed well. But the real worry is Wanindu Hasaranga who is their main spinner and needs to find his form quickly, because his poor bowling was one of the biggest details for their loss to England.

Ireland: Team Preview & Recent Performance

Ireland’s T20 World Cup squad has mix of experienced players with some new faces who are ready to perform. Their warm-up series against Italy which they won 2-1 gave them some good match practice before the main tournament starts.

Ross Adair and Harry Tector will open the batting, looking to give solid starts without playing too slow. Tector was excellent against Italy’s bowling, scoring 150 runs in three matches at strike rate of 143. Since Sri Lankan conditions are similar to what he faced there, the opener should do well again.

Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker will handle the middle order batting with their experience. Stirling found his form at right time scoring 68 runs from three T20Is against Italy which is good sign. But his record speaks for itself with 3,888 T20I runs including 24 fifties and one hundred making him Ireland’s best batsman in this format and very important player during middle overs.

Mark Adair and Matthew Humphreys are Ireland’s main wicket takers in bowling. Both bowlers looking in good rhythm right now, taking 11 wickets together against Italy. Mark will specially look to get one of Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara and Kusal Mendis early with new ball, as that will hurt Sri Lanka badly.

Barry McCarthy and Gareth Delany will support after power play overs finish. Delany’s spin bowling should work well in Colombo’s pitch conditions.
