ENG: Team Preview & Performance

England come into this clash riding high on confidence – they’ve won 10 of their last 11 T20Is in 2026, which is a hell of a record. But that opening game against Nepal? That was way too close for comfort. Nearly threw it away defending 185 before Sam Curran pulled off a brilliant final over to scrape home by just 5 runs. The batting did its job, but the bowling was all over the place, and that’s a real worry heading into a match against the West Indies.

The top order’s been firing though. Salt and Buttler come out swinging from ball one, which has been England’s MO lately. They set the tone, then Bethell and Brook keep the foot down through the middle overs. Bethell was superb against Nepal, smashing 55 off 35, and he’s in the kind of form where you expect that every game now. These four have been the backbone of England’s recent success – they just don’t let teams settle.

Lower down, Curran and Jacks provide the late hitting when England need to finish strong. Curran’s become their go-to death bowler as well, mixing up his pace with cutters and slower balls that bamboozle batters at the end. He’ll need to be on point here because the bowling unit struggled badly in that Nepal match. Archer and Wood both went for over 10 an over, and Wood’s actually been replaced by Jamie Overton for this game. Rashid had a shocker too, leaking 14 runs per over, so how he bounces back will be crucial.

History’s on England’s side against the Windies though. Buttler hammered them for 165 runs last year at a strike rate of 157, and the spinners – Bethell and Rashid – picked up 4 wickets each in that series. Rashid and Dawson have the job of breaking up West Indies’ batting this time around, and they’ll need to be far better than what we saw against Nepal if England want to keep this winning streak going.

WI: Team Preview & Recent Performance

The Windies started their World Cup in perfect trend, thrashing Scotland by 35 runs after putting up 182-5. And you know what? These Indian pitches are absolutely made for the way West Indies play cricket. They love coming hard at you, boundaries from the get-go, and these wickets allow them to do exactly that. Every team in this tournament should be wary of them.

Shai Hope’s the glue that holds this batting line-up together. He’s been in ridiculous form this season – 264 runs in 10 innings striking at 141. That’s proper numbers. Brandon King’s been doing bits too. His last five T20I knocks read 49 off 30, 27 off 16, 47 off 35, 50 off 41, and 35 off 30. Consistent and aggressive, which is what you want at the top.

The real danger comes in the middle though. Powell, Rutherford and Hetmyer can all smash it out of the park, and when one of them gets going, game over. Powell and Hetmyer have IPL experience so they know these Indian surfaces inside out. Hetmyer showed that against Scotland – absolutely belted 64 off 36 balls and was their best bat on the day. Even further down, Shepherd and Holder can clear the ropes at the death, so there’s no let-up.

Joseph brings genuine pace with the new ball and can rough up batters early on. Shepherd and Holder give them options through the middle and death – Holder especially knows these Indian conditions from the IPL where he averages 27.56. His slower balls and accuracy at the death make him a nightmare to face. Then you’ve got Hosein and Motie with the spin, and on this surface they should cause England plenty of headaches.

Here’s the thing – West Indies have England’s number in recent times. Powell smashed 126 runs against them last year at a strike rate of 182, which is brutal. Hosein’s got 23 wickets against England in 11 matches at an economy of just 7.58, so he knows how to bowl to them. And Shepherd? He grabbed 5-32 in that Scotland game, so he’s bang in form. England better be ready because the Windies are coming for them.

ENG vs WI Today’s Pitch Report & Toss Condition

The Wankhede pitch should be good for batting – it’s that typical red soil surface with decent pace and bounce that batters love. First innings scores here usually sit around 177-191, so we’re looking at a high-scoring game. That said, the seamers and spinners have been getting a bit early on in this World Cup, probably down to the sea breeze and the pitch being a touch two-paced. The real factor though? Dew. It’s going to be massive in the second innings, making the ball slippery and hard for bowlers to grip. Expect whoever wins the toss to bowl first – exploit any early movement, then chase with the dew on your side. In this tournament here India beat USA by 29 runs and England defeated Nepal by 3 wickets.
