Team Preview and Performance

West Indies Women

Three T20Is. Three losses. The margins were 43, 17 and 40 runs and none of them felt that close either.

The 50-over format gives them a different challenge but not necessarily an easier one. They have lost four of their last five ODIs. The Sri Lanka series in February went 2-1 and West Indies were the ones on the wrong side of it. The batting simply cannot hold together when it comes under sustained pressure and Australia are very good at applying sustained pressure.

Hayley Matthews is carrying too much. She bats, she bowls, she leads โ€” and when she has a bad day the team tends to have a bad day with her. Dottin coming back in gives them a genuine option at the top and Taylor is still class in the middle. But the bowling leaks badly in the middle overs outside Afy Fletcher and that has been the story all tour.

World Cup qualification through the 2025 qualifiers is something. Beating Ireland and Thailand showed they belong at that level. England and South Africa last year showed they are not quite there with the best yet.

WI-W Playing 11: Hayley Matthews (c), Deandra Dottin, Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry, Aaliyah Alleyne, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack, Qiana Joseph, Jannillea Glasgow, Shawnisha Hector

Australia Women

14 wins from 15. A world record 409 in an ODI innings. A 3-0 T20I series win over West Indies just last week. At some point the numbers stop being impressive and just become expected.

Molineux has taken the captaincy and the team has not blinked. Mooney and Litchfield make life very difficult for any bowling attack โ€” both find boundaries, both rotate well, neither gives their wicket away without making you work for it. Perry does what Perry does in the middle. Gardner and Sutherland mean the batting depth goes genuinely six or seven deep and the bowling is no different. King, Gardner, Schutt, Brown โ€” there is no soft over in this line-up.

West Indies were beaten by 43, 17 and 40 runs in the T20I series. Australia never looked like losing any of them. That is the team West Indies are walking into today.

AUS-W Playing 11: Beth Mooney, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux (c), Georgia Wareham, Alana King, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown, Kim Garth

Key Players to Watch

WI-W Key Players

  1. Hayley Matthews: 310 runs and 5 wickets in the last T20I series against Australia โ€” the captain does everything for this side
  2. Stafanie Taylor: The most technically sound batter in the lineup, holds the middle order together when it matters
  3. Deandra Dottin: Back in the squad and dangerous from ball one โ€” can shift the momentum of an innings inside a few overs
  4. Afy Fletcher: Lead leg-spinner and the most threatening bowler in the attack on slower Caribbean tracks

AUS-W Key Players

  1. Beth Mooney: Averaging 53.00 in her last ten ODIs โ€” consistent, hard to dismiss and sets the tone at the top
  2. Phoebe Litchfield: 430 runs in her last ten matches, the most in-form batter in the side right now
  3. Ellyse Perry: Still a dual threat with bat and ball โ€” experience and quality in the middle order
  4. Alana King: 20 wickets in her last ten matches โ€” the bowler West Indies will be most desperate to avoid

WI-W vs AUS-W Pitch Report

Warner Park does not do spinners many favours early on but by the time the middle overs arrive the track slows right down and that changes the game. Boundaries are short, the surface is flat and 250 is a realistic first innings target. Pacers will sniff around early with the new ball but it does not last.

The dew is the conversation that matters. It comes in heavy in the evening and once it does the ball gets slippery fast. Gripping a delivery becomes genuinely difficult and batting suddenly feels a lot easier than it did two hours earlier. The team chasing will know this going in.

WI-W vs AUS-W Toss Prediction

Bowl first. That is the call and both captains know it before they even walk out for the toss. Nobody wants to be defending a total at Warner Park with dew on the ball in the final ten overs. Whoever wins the coin flip will be putting the opposition in and backing themselves to chase it down under lights.

WI-W vs AUS-W Today Match Prediction โ€” Who Will Win?

Hard to make a case for West Indies here. Australia swept the T20I leg 3-0, have won 14 of their last 15 across all formats and own a 14-1 head-to-head record in ODIs against this side going back to 1997. Mooney and Litchfield will fancy this pitch, King is in the form of her life and Australia do not lose games they are supposed to win. West Indies need something special from Matthews and a big day with the ball. It is possible. It is just not likely. We are backing AUS-W to win the 1st ODI.
