4th T20I Scorecard Review โ What Happened in Wellington?
Before we get into today’s match prediction, it is worth understanding exactly what unfolded in the 4th T20I, because the patterns from that game will carry heavy weight into this decider.
South Africa won it in the middle overs. Esterhuizen’s 57 off 36 gave them a fighting 164/5 and then Subrayen and Maharaj strangled the chase with their spin. New Zealand lost wickets in a cluster between overs 14 and 18, fell 19 short and the series was level. That middle-over spin combination is the blueprint South Africa bring into Christchurch.

Team Performance
NZ:
New Zealand head into this series decider knowing they have done the harder work to get here. Three games into the series, the Black Caps held a 2โ1 lead and looked on course to seal it at home. Wellington had other ideas.
Their first match against South Africa in this series raised serious questions โ bowled out cheaply and outplayed in the field. But the response in Hamilton was vintage New Zealand. Posting 202/4 with the bat, the bowlers then led by Ish Sodhi dismantled the Proteas for just 107. Auckland was similar, just colder and more clinical. Finn Allen nearly single-handedly chased down South Africa’s meagre 136 with a blistering half-century, and the Black Caps barely broke a sweat.
Wellington, however, showed the cracks. The power play failed to fire, Finn Allen fell early, Devon Conway could not build a partnership and suddenly 165 looked like 200. The middle order, which had been relatively protected throughout the series, was exposed under the pressure of a challenging chase in the final five overs. Gerald Coetzee and Prenelan Subrayen sensed the uncertainty and bowled accordingly.
The honest concern going into this decider is clear. New Zealand are a brilliant side when their top two set the platform. When Finn Allen and Devon Conway fire together, this team wins easily. When one or both of them fall inside the power play, the middle order has looked shaky under pressure. Glenn Phillips has been the finisher of the series and brought crucial runs in the 4th T20I, but a finisher cannot do his job if he is walking in at 70/4 in the 12th over.
The bowling remains a major strength. Lockie Ferguson has been virtually unplayable across the four matches, collecting 7 wickets and consistently generating uncomfortable pace and bounce. Ben Sears has been economical and dangerous with the new ball. Christchurch conditions at Hagley Oval will suit Ferguson more than almost any other ground in the country, and that is a significant advantage for the Black Caps heading into the series decider.
Standout Performers for New Zealand This Series:
- Finn Allen: 140+ runs at a strike rate of 165+. The series’ leading run-scorer
- Lockie Ferguson: 7 wickets across 4 games. His raw pace has been the defining bowling performance of the series.
- Glenn Phillips: The finisher. Delivered when it mattered in both the 2nd and 4th matches.
New Zealand Playing 11:ย Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Tim Robinson, Nick Kelly, Bevon Jacobs, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Cole McConchie, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears, Lockie Ferguson
SA:
South Africa have been one of the stories of this series. Written off after two consecutive heavy defeats, this experimental squad โ without several primary stars โ levelled the series in Wellington with composure, discipline and a game plan that was executed almost to perfection.
That Wellington win was coming though. Connor Esterhuizen has been the breakout star of the entire tour, scoring his maiden T20I half-century at the critical moment when his side needed a platform. Keshav Maharaj, leading this inexperienced group, has been outstanding as captain and bowler. His ability to dry up the run rate in the middle overs while simultaneously taking wickets gives South Africa a genuine match-winner they can build around.
The arrival of Prenelan Subrayen has changed the complexion of this series entirely. His 2/13 in Wellington – triggering the collapse that ended New Zealand’s chase โ was not something any analyst saw coming. The left-arm off-spinner created angles and variations that the Black Caps’ batters clearly had not prepared for.
The weakness remains consistent. Outside of Esterhuizen and Tony de Zorzi’s occasional starts, this batting unit has not collectively fired. Wiaan Mulder walked back for a golden duck in Wellington. Rubin Hermann has been solid without ever dominating. For South Africa to win today’s match, they need a total that their bowlers can defend โ and given the Hagley Oval conditions, posting 165โ175 and putting pressure on the chase is their most realistic path to a series win.
Gerald Coetzee carrying the pace attack is a reasonable ask. He took 3/31 in Wellington and his ability to reverse swing the older ball in the death overs is a real threat. With Ottneil Baartman supporting, South Africa have enough pace variety to compete.
Standout Performers for South Africa This Series:
- Connor Esterhuizen: Maiden T20I fifty in the most important match. The series most consistent run-scorer for South Africa.
- Keshav Maharaj: 2/22 in Wellington. Led from the front with both captaincy and bowling.
- Prenelan Subrayen: 2/13 in his breakthrough Wellington performance.
- Gerald Coetzee: 3/31 in Wellington.
South Africa Playing 11:ย Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Rubin Hermann, Jason Smith, Dian Forrester, George Linde, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Nqobani Mokoena, Lutho Sipamla
Key Players to Watch โ Who Will Win Today’s Match
New Zealand
- Finn Allen: If he fires in the power play, New Zealand win this series. He is the most explosive batter on either side.
- Lockie Ferguson: Hagley Oval conditions are tailor-made for his pace and bounce. He could be the decisive factor.
- Devon Conway: The accumulator. When he partners with Allen at the top, the opposition bowling attack rarely recovers.
South Africa
- Connor Esterhuizen โ The form batter in this squad. Christchurch is the stage for another defining knock.
- Keshav Maharaj โ Captain and match-winner. His ability to turn the game in the middle overs gives SA their best chance.
- Prenelan Subrayen โ New Zealand will be better prepared but his skill is not a one-match wonder. He can hurt them again.

Today’s Match Prediction: NZ to Win the Series 3โ2
New Zealand’s bowling firepower at Hagley Oval, combined with the home advantage and the form of Finn Allen at the top of the order, gives the Black Caps the edge in this winner-takes-all T20I. South Africa have shown tremendous character but they are asking their experimental batting unit to fire one more time in conditions that will offer extra assistance to the pace bowlers throughout both innings.
The Black Caps close out the series on home soil. New Zealand to win.
