Team Performance

Australia: Team Preview & Performance

Australia come into this World Cup in pretty shocking form, to be honest. In their recent last 5 T20Is, all in Asia, and that 3-0 drubbing by Pakistan is still fresh in everyone’s mind. The last game was an absolute disaster – bowled out for 96 chasing 208. Stoinis got 23, Green made 22, and the rest barely troubled the scorers. Not ideal preparation.

The Top Order Marsh and Inglis will open. Marsh only managed 19 runs in two games against Pakistan, which is a concern when you’re the captain. His overall numbers aren’t terrible – 218 runs in 9 games, strike rate around 154 – but you’d want more from your opener. Inglis has been going at 204 this season though, so there’s firepower there. He’s made 172 runs in 7 games.

Green bats three and honestly, he might be their best hope right now. Led the run charts against Pakistan with 93, strikes at over 153, and gets a fifty roughly every fourth game. If he clicks, Australia look dangerous. If he doesn’t, they’re in trouble.

In the Middle Order Maxwell didn’t tour Pakistan but he loves batting in Asia. His Sri Lanka record is ridiculous – 254 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 190. He’s also grabbed 3 wickets, so he’ll bowl a bit too. The middle order has Stoinis, Tim David and Travis Head as well. David’s been absolutely smashing it lately – 395 runs in his last 10 knocks at a strike rate of 198. When he gets going, he can take games away in 3-4 overs.

Australia bowling Line up Ellis and Zampa are the main men. Both have picked up 9 wickets in their last 5 games despite all the losses. Zampa got 5 against Pakistan including 2 in that final disaster, so he’s still doing his job. Bartlett’s been useful – 3 wickets in the last couple of games plus 44 runs with the bat. Maxwell and Kuhnemann give them spin options.

Australia need to forget about Pakistan fast. The talent’s there, but confidence must be low after getting hammered like that.

Ireland: Team Preview & Recent Performance

Ireland started their campaign with a loss to Sri Lanka – went down by 20 runs in the end. McCarthy and Dockrell got 2 wickets each which was decent, and Tector made 40 with the bat, but yeah, not the result they wanted.

Stirling and Adair are opening again. Adair looked alright last game, smacked 34 off 23 balls. Stirling though, he’s been out of sorts – only 109 runs in his last 6 matches. Really needs to get some runs under his belt. Tector bats at three and he’s been their go-to guy lately. He’s got 327 runs from his last ten matches with strike rate of 128, which is a bit slow for T20s these days. Still, when everyone else is struggling, he’s the one delivering.

Tucker made 21 against the Lankans, and he’ll bat in the middle order with Campher and Calitz. Campher’s been scoring – 92 runs in three games before this tournament, though he got just 13 in the opener.

The bowling’s probably where Ireland can cause some damage. Humphreys, McCarthy, Dockrell, Delany and Mark Adair make up the attack. McCarthy’s been brilliant recently – both him and Humphreys have 14 wickets in their last 9 T20Is. That’s a serious return. Dockrell’s taken 5 wickets in 3 games in Sri Lanka as well, so he knows how to bowl in these conditions.

Ireland will find their chances against an Australian side that’s lost 5 straight and got absolutely hammered by Pakistan recently. The Aussies are low on confidence, and Ireland could definitely cause an upset here if their bowlers turn up.
